Equine Cryotherapy

Equine cryotherapy treatments are performed by using the Kaasen Pro machine. The device utilizes state-of-the-art technology to deliver a unique and powerful treatment. By harnessing the power of liquid Carbon Dioxide (CO2), our device applies a cold spray directly onto the horses coat, rapidly cooling it from 32°C (90°F) to 4°C (39°F) and below. By rapidly cooling the body to below 4°C, the innovative approach unlocks a plethora of benefits.  The device has dual temperature sensors, a cold shock indicator light, a treatment timer and an intelligent proximity sensor to ensure the optimal treatment every time.

The spray element of the device provides cooling and pressure to the targeted area which provides a natural analgesic effect and a reduction in muscle tension.

The cold compress attachments are ideal for use as a massage compress. At -40°C, the cool compresses provide a soothing and effective therapeutic modality for relaxing and softening tight muscles.

As soon as the cold source is removed, the body warms the area quickly by expanding the blood vessels to around 4 times their original diameter (vasodilation). A rush of freshly oxygenated blood saturates the tissue, bringing with it, hormones, neurotransmitters, and nutrients. At the same time, unwanted by-products and waste produced from natural body processes are removed from the area to be processed by the lymphatic system.

If your horse is nervous or uncomfortable with the noise of blasting of the gas I will work hard with the owner/carer to help desensitize the horse to the noise and work with the frozen roller ball which does not emit any noise when in use.

Treatments

General Mainenance, pre or post event

This is a full body treatment that can be used pre or post event or as a general body maintenance work for your horse. There is no downtime with cryotherapy treatments unlike a sports therapy massage.

During a general maintenance, pre or post-event treatment I will palpate the horses body to identify any key areas that may need more attention and analysis where the horse will benefit from different types of cryotherapy treatments.

Cryotherapy is a great prevention tool and can be used on healthy animals at regular intervals to increase muscle stamina and endurance. The device can also be used methodically to improve your horses stride length and ease their legs and hooves after training on a hard floor.

Treatment to aid with:

  • Muscle and fascia release

  • Increased range of motion

  • Improved performance when used pre-exercise

  • Speeds up recovery time post-exercise

Laminitis

Horses with Laminitis or pre-laminitis symptoms

Laminae tissue in a horse with laminitis suffers from poor oxygen supply and nutrition. An affected part is swollen painful and inflamed.

When the affected hoof is treated with extreme cold, a rapid constriction of the blood vessels limits the access of toxins and other inflammation-inducing substances to the area.

It helps to reduce swelling and minimize inflammatory response. Further, the pain conduction signals are inhibited, hence the pain subsides. After the treatment, the region  starts warming up, blood circulation improves which increases oxygen to the region and promotes lymphatic drainage and better cell nutrition.

By helping to quickly reduce the swelling there is less chance of the laminae tissue dying or being damaged and preventing the pedal bone from rotating.

Pain Injury Relief and Faster Recovery

Horses with arthiritis, muscle/tendon/ligament strains, sprains & tears, knocks & swellings, bone bruises and Oedemas/hematomas can all  be treated with cryotherapy. Please call to discuss your horse's individual needs.

In reaction to the extreme cold temperatures reached by KaasenPro, areas of swelling and buildup of fluid can be reduced quicker than traditonal methods of icing. The promotion of healthy blood to the area will speed up the healing process and ease the painful area directly.

Cryotherapy increases the production of b-endorphines and norepinephrine, which are natural pain killers. Targeting injuries and pain directly with pressurised spray nozzles designed to enable early intervention and promote healing.
